12. WILLIAM PALMER (1704–after 1777) (William, Gershom, Walter)

William Palmer was born on 16 November 1704. He was baptized in March 1705 in Stonington. He was probably alive on 23 March 1777. He married Abigail Wyatt on 16 December 1728 in Stonington. [1]

William and Abigail were admitted to communion on 22 August 1742 in the church in North Stonington. [2]

William’s father gave his three sons, William, Elihu and Wait, his rights in two parcels of land in Stonington in 1728. William and Wait delivered this land to Elihu. On 11 June 1757 William sold to James Covey for four shillings land in the Purchase of Catapeset that was formerly owned by Gershom Palmer. In 1758 William gave between 30 and 40 acres of land lying by that of Lieutenant Joseph Palmer to his son William, 3rd. In 1764 William bought from Stephen Billings for 25 pounds 50 acres of land next to land of William, Gershom and Wait Palmer and of John Chapin. In 1772 William bought from Nathan Kenyon of Charlestown 50 acres of land for 400 milled Spanish dollars. On 11 August 1773 William sold to his son Jonathan Wyatt for five pounds 50 acres of land in North Stonington and he made over to his son William 37 acres. [3]

William’s brother-in-law Elijah Wyatt called William “brother” in his will of 23 March 1777.

13. ABIGAIL WYATT (bp. 1711–after 1777) (Jonathan, Nathaniel, Edward)

Abigail Wyatt was baptized on 6 May 1711 in Stonington. She probably died after 23 March 1777. [4] She married William Palmer.

Abigail’s brother Elijah left a bequest to her in his will of 23 March 1777.

Children of William Palmer and Abigail Wyatt, all births recorded in Stonington: [5]

i. Grace Palmer was born on 4 July 1729. She was baptized on 1 April 1733 in North Stonington. She might be the Grace Palmer who married Nathan Palmer on 6 November 1745 in Coventry. Nathan, the son of Benjamin (Joseph, Nehemiah, Walter) Palmer and Rebecca (Gershom, Walter) Palmer, was born on 27 November 1723 in Coventry. [6]

ii. William Palmer (#6) was born on 11 September 1731.  He died between 10 October and 18 November 1801, probably in Brookfield.  He married Phebe Darrow.

iii. Martha Palmer was born on 29 April 1734. She was baptized on 17 July 1734 in North Stonington. She married as his second wife Lemuel (Christopher, George) Darrow of Groton on 17 July 1760.

Elijah Wyatt mentions his niece Martha Darrow in his will of 23 March 1777.

iv.  Abigail Palmer was born on 31 August 1736. She married Stephen Brown on 2 November 1758 in Stonington. Stephen, the son of Ichabod and Sarah (Chapman) Brown, was born on 22 June 1736 in Stonington.  He was baptized on 25 July 1736 in North Stonington. He died on 26 December 1813 and is buried in the Ridges Cemetery in Mansfield, Tolland County. [7]

Abigail’s uncle Elijah Wyatt mentions the daughters of Stephen Brown in his will of 23 March 1777.

v. Sarah Palmer was born on 22 July 1738. She was baptized on 5 August 1738 in North Stonington and she died on 8 August 1738 in Stonington.

vi. Jonathan Wyatt Palmer was born on 11 November 1739. He was baptized on 22 June 1740 in North Stonington. He married Jemima Satterly of Preston on 21 May 1761. Jemima may be the daughter of William and Mary Satterly, born on 14 May 1737 in Groton. She is buried in the New Poquetanuck cemetery in Stonington. [8]

Jonathan sold 110 acres in North Stonington to his brother Azariah for 123 pounds on 11 August 1773. [9] He was a sergeant in the First Connecticut Regiment in the Revolutionary War. [10]

Jonathan Wyatt was left a bequest in the 23 March 1777 will of his uncle Elijah Wyatt.

vii. Azariah Wyatt Palmer was born on 22 May 1742.  He died on 12 April 1821 and is buried in the Burritt Cemetery in Hinesburg, Chittenden County, Vermont. He married Mary Darrow of Stonington on 26 January 1764 in Stonington. Mary was the sister of his brother William’s wife. [11]

Azariah bought two acres of salt marsh from Andrew Chapman in 1771. He bought land on the dividing line between Stonington and Voluntown from Stephen Brown for 25 pounds in 1772. He sold to his brother William ten acres of land in Stonington for 60 pounds on 11 August 1773. On 4 April 1776, Azariah Palmer of Plainfield sold land to Elisha Palmer of Stonington for 130 pounds. Azariah moved from Plainfield to Little Hoosuck, Bauch County, New York. [13]

viii. Elijah Palmer was born on 4 April 1745 and he died on 9 May 1749 in Stonington.

ix. Borodell Palmer was born on 9 May 1748.  She died, probably of complications from childbirth, on 6 August 1771 in Stonington. She married Nathan Randall, Jr. of Voluntown on 5 December 1765. Nathan, the son of Nathan and Mary (Cottrell) Randall, was born on 10 October 1755. He married second Dorothy Palmer. Dorothy was the daughter of Gershom (George, Gershom, Walter) and Dorothy (Brown) Palmer. [14]

x. Barbara Palmer was born on 27 January 1750. She died on 15 March 1805, age 55, in North Stonington. She married Nathan Steward (or Stewart) on 1 May 1768 in Stonington. Nathan, the son of William and Elizabeth (Stevens) Steward and the stepbrother of Phebe Palmer (#5), was born on 22 June 1745. He died on 1 November 1813, age 69. Nathan and Barbara are buried in the Great Plains Cemetery in North Stonington. [15]

Barbara’s uncle Elijah Palmer mentioned Nathan in his will of 23 March 1777.

xi. Anna Palmer (twin) was born on 1 July 1752 and probably died young.

xii. Esther Palmer (twin) was born on 1 July 1752 and probably died young.
